    First sale for full rate.

After months of implementing DL into my workflow on top of gigging/projects I earned my first client at my full rate. *Disclaimer: I have not been doing a ton of outreach like I should be on a weekly basis. Just FYI We went right into a sales conversation after a successful proof session. No objections. I almost didn’t know what to say since they were more than willing to pay and set up the next session lol. After our conversation, I sent a proposal to them last night and received payment this morn... See more

    First big win 🤩

This spring I invited a local artist I got to know at one of our open mic shows to come and hang out, make some beats and chill at my place. I called him up a week or so after the session to ask if he was interested to continue working on what we had started, which he was. After a short call I sent him a proposal for working out the two songs and he let me know he's in but he has to pay off some tax-debt first and that we could start later this year. In the meantime I had my doubts if it would re... See more

    First cold outreach close!

Took me a while, but first deposit's finally in the bank! Reached out in April, kept in touch all summer long and scheduled pre production call for next Monday. Not a crazy win (1500€ for a song + some guidance on how to lead a campaign on social networks) but it's the first time I book a project at my full rate, and first time I close a deal using the SSF, so a milestone for sure.

Finally landed my first paid project! WOOHOO!

Wow oh wow, this is a great feeling. Nearly 400 outreaches later, yesterday I wrapped up a proof session with this singer songwriter and we really vibed creatively, she loved what I did to develop out her demo track for about an hour or two and then she was eager to get the SSF scheduled for the next day to find out about all the details, so one SSF later this evening, I’ve officially collected my first deposit and feel on top of the world! I will say there was a lot of impostor syndrome and unce... See more

Sep '25Nice job Dan. Just the start! A lot of those artists you’ve already connected with will loop back around too once you get into content. Happens to everyone. One project is pretty easy to manage, but there’s a cool guest workshop in the classroom from Riley called managing projects.I would also recap the “remote production walkthrough” from Adam in the dark label library.

As far as managing projects, I've been using a trello board to track what step of the process each song is in. Not as fancy or comprehensive as paid CRMs but it's good enough for balancing a handful of projects.

    First Inbound Sale!

Hey y’all, just had a successful sales call with an inbound lead: they said the price was higher than expected, but worth it and wanted to send the deposit and start right away. Woo! What I learned: • Inbound content doesn’t need to blow up to be effective. • My first SSF call last week was awkward as heck (I went down rabbit trails and lacked confidence). From that I realized I need to internalize the SSF framework and work from minimal notes so I could stay more relaxed and focussed. I have a lot ... See more

Sep '25Wow, that's amazing! Great job 🤩 Any tips on how you're able to bring in 6k per month while only spending 20 hours per week on those projects? Is it mainly about being efficient as a producer or is it about charging higher fee for example? I've done a couple of 5k months this year, but I've been working probably 60 hours, so I'd love to hear more about what you're doing!👏

Oct '25@Sivert i’ve brought in a lot of album & ep projects and negotiated on a monthly rate around 900-1100 through 6-10 months, and a few similar situations that are more single based rollouts but still consistent.tbh i should raise my rates i would make more but ive been prioritizing being prolific and working on larger projects as an executive producer, since my 2-3 year goals are to be working as an exec producer on album projects with global appeal.this year i’ll be involved in at least 4 ... Big Lessons I Learned

I learned so much the last couple days and have been really feeling a shift in my perspective of my role as a producer in the career of an artist. Just wanted to share some of these lessons here! One of the biggest realizations I had was about my sales process. I realized that I've been not actually consulting and advising the artist on their career, but that I was actually just taking orders. If an artist came to me and said they want to do an album, I did not question if it was financially, str... See more

Aug '25I’m on a similar journey. “them not only seeing me as a producer, but as an ally and a valuable asset to their career” is a relationship I’ve achieved with several artists over years. Being able to give that feeling to an artist in the first couple conversations would be huge!

8 months of working with Dark Label...

Just wanted to drop a quick appreciation post for Daniel and the team 🙌🏾 Before working with Dark Label, I’d been creating production content for around 7 years, but I was burning out trying to run a sample pack business on my own. It was a lot. Dan came in and helped me simplify everything. We put together a mentorship offer that followed a similar structure to how artists work (applications, sales calls, proposals etc...) And this year I’ve made just under $50k from that, while working less! Huge love to the team, and for anyone new here, this stuff just works! 🙏🏾

    A couple of wins

Hey everyone! I just wanted to share some wins from the last week. I did a LOT of outreach before Dark Label (I don't have an exact number but its around the 2000 mark) and to put it shortly, it didn't translate into consistent work. But now I'm starting to see some success from the outreach I've done within my time at Dark Label which is incredibly gratifying. This week out of 3 sales calls, 2 have been closed for my full rate, one actually opted to pay in full up front and the 3rd call wasn't s... See more

    Emotional win!

A songwriter I know has been working on it for a year with a local producer but she was very unhappy about their work and behaviour. She decided to abandon them and produce everything from scratch with me (paid!), which is already a win per se. Now, yesterday I sent her a quick draft of an arrangement that I put together in a couple of hours for the first single. She told me that for the first time ever a production of one of her songs made her feel something, that she almost cried, and that she'... See more

First music sales call ever First client signed We talked for maybe an hour going through what the process would be. Came up with the terms which he was happy with. Handled some of the objection about making sure the production was of good quality. So keen!

    Moving To LA!

Hey all, I've been totally gone this last month, missed y'all! Recently I had the opportunity to meet and do some work for bob clearmountain and apogee, as well as meet some really cool people like CLA and TLA (I didn't talk to them, but chris tapped my back so a win is a win), I even got to experience some atmos for the first time! Anyway! After the trip, I decided California is the place to be (who woulda thought?), and so I'm moving up on the 18th and I'll be staying in Orange County (not quite ... See more

Going to be a Dark Dad!

My wife and I are expecting a baby later on this year! We’re extremely excited and feel like the arrival could not come soon enough yet at the same time it still feels a long time away! Any Dads out there got some keen tips for a first time father while still running a business?

Jul '25Congrats! I had my first kid back in November. It's definitely very challenging at first. It took awhile to get into a new routine, but once I figured out what that looked like it made things way easier. The no sleep situation was definitely the hardest part. So just don't be hard on yourself and know that you're probably not going to get as much done for awhile after you have your kid.

Jul '25Congrats Harley!Take enough time off in the beginning. Your family will need you more than your business in the first couple of months. i found it a very creative and inspiring time but i wouldnt try to be overly productive - just save your musical and business ideas for later.Having kids took away time but gave me more drive and motivation for my business after all.Wish you all the best for your new family 💛P.s. check out the “diaper free” method and give it a try 👌 best tip i can givehttps://nestwaerme.li/en/diaper-free

    Previous client win

An artist I worked with pre Dark Label came back for a second song recently. During our catch up call we chatted about my new process (thanks to Dark Label) and she was more than happy to agree to a higher rate $250 above our previous song just a couple months ago. Feels like a step in the right direction of being able to communicate my value 🙂

    Mixing Project at New Rate

Hey all, I just closed on a mixing project at my new hourly rate ($50/hr). The artist bought a beat from me back in 2018 but I followed up with him to get him on the phone and explain my new process of working with full production clients. After a casual call and a sales call the project went from a custom beat to mixing 3 of his records at my full rate. Because of the commute the offer included covering gas to and from the studio as well as post production which includes my mastering engineer($2... See more

    I am now a Co-Owner of StudioBook!

Hey everyone, I wanted to share something cool I’ve been working on. Some of you know I used to get a lot of business from a site called StudioTime, which was basically Airbnb for studios. When it shut down a few years ago, I realized how much I had relied on it to bring in new clients. That’s actually what led me to Dan and Dark Label. I needed to rethink my whole business model. After that, I briefly tried to start my own version of StudioTime, but I realized pretty quickly that I needed to get ... See more

First close with the DLM method!

Celebrating my first time successfully moving an artist through cold DM to casual call to proof session to paid deposit for remote song production via sessionwire. I went from the proof session directly into the sales call. After the session/sales call I sent her an email proposal that she paid upon receiving. Week 7 of 30 outreaches per week. I have 5 more artists who have said “yes” to my proposals but say they need more time to make the first payment. All of them were willing to book follow up ... See more

    Hourly Rate > Guesswork

I’m sharing a different win today. Usually I get remote clients that pay for the full production, this time I got a client reach out via Vampr. He came to my studio for a cool proof session and I just had a ssf call with him. As he is a student, I quickly understood that the budget was pretty much non-existent and that’s usually where other discussions kinda stopped. This time I got to pitch him working on his songs in multiple studio sessions as he’s not living very far, calculated on my hourly... See more
