    Fresh Finds playlist + appreciation

Hi all - one of my clients had his single we co-wrote and I produced/mixed added to Fresh Finds out here in Australia today! Super stoked for him as it was the first of his songs that's been added to a playlist like this. I'm into outreach this week and have been really appreciating the knowledge and advice in the replays, dm's and classroom - THANKS EVERYONE! https://open.spotify.com/track/7KUgDyO9IXEHDBp3yDQ5p0?si=39841e40059f411e

    Remix Contest

So I entered that remix contest that Seids was running and turns out I actually won! I only spent a few hours on it and definitely didn't expect to win but the top prize was $1000 so I gave it a go. You can check it out here if you want to listen: https://fadr.com/colthillmusic/64d12c6855b26aad5eb9370c Definitely a nice start to Friday!

Sep '23@Christian Thanks!! I think I just knew exactly what I wanted to do with it! ๐Ÿ˜‚ Not often a project is that fast but it was a remix so the vocal was there to follow haha. For actual productions I try and get a melody idea first. I find it so much easier to build around that! Have go to samples ready, can always swap them after. Also have a template for production. Just blank channels where things go etc. Serum loaded, piano loaded, guitar amp loaded. Vocal chain on a channel. Takes away all the setup faff and just delete what you donโ€™t need!

    Slow Lane Win

#wins this is my first win I'm posting on here, very excited haha. I've been networking (both in person and online) for MANY months now trying to break into different scenes around LA, and it's finally starting to pay off. The other day I randomly got a dm from an artist manager that said he "heard I was the guy to work with in LA" for when he and his artist were in town from NY. The singer is a really dope hyperpop artist and is super connected to other bigger artists and managers as well. Real... See more

    Give what the artist wants

Just wanted to come here to tell a little story that JUST happened to me yesterday. I met a really good artist last year that studied at Stargate's school in Norway and we immediately bonded. At the time he was already working with another producer and I didn't want to overstep cause i knew the guy. A couple of weeks ago I called to come and write some topelines for another project and showed him some songs i was working and he freaked out at how much he loved the production so he asked me to do... So itโ€™s taken about four months of learning and personal development, but Iโ€™m happy to say that within the last week Iโ€™ve managed to secure not only my first client, but a second one too! Both four track EP projects, ยฃ4800 a piece, splitting payments over a monthly basis. Iโ€™ve worked in music all my life, though the act of sustainability being paid for production has always remained elusive. 4 casuals in the next 5 days, WDYD?

It went well enough in the DMs for four singers to each agree to a casual call. So, the next step is to get em wanting a proof session. If this was you, What Do You Do in these upcoming conversations to get them wanting and comfortable for a proof session???

Aug '23What I've done in the past (not that I'm an expert in proof sessions, as I rarely do them) is I just straight up ask them. I would say something like "Hey I really love what you got going on. I would love to work on something with you. I can't produce a full song for you, as this is my full time job. However I'd love to do a writing session (or send loops, start an idea ect.) for free with you just to get something started."

Early on, I struggled to organize my weekly tasks (sessions, meetings, outreach, production, mixing, etc.) and it really slowed me down. Win + Question

I had a nice win a few days ago: A track placement for an up-and-coming Nigerian singer and it features quite a huge Nigerian rapper on it too (good for the catalogue). Not only that, I got paid my full rate for the production and kept 50% of my publishing. So good deal all round really! ๐Ÿ† When it came to the credit, on Spotify for instance it says produced by myself and the artist manager's name. When I questioned this, the manager said that he came up with the idea/genre for the production and... See more

Aug '23 (edited)In hiphop this is common when youโ€™re working with an A&R and but not a manager. I havenโ€™t experienced this working in afrobeats but then again I am working with an exec whoโ€™s being crediting on everything but heโ€™s very much involved. Also, to Philโ€™s point, if he and the artist made that business arrangement then thatโ€™s what it is. But, again congrats.๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿพ

Aug '23Way to go man!!! Sounds so dope! I havnt really heard of a manager being credited as producer but I think Phillip nailed it with "long as the bizz is all good"

    8. Kensaye
      Kensaye

Sep '23@Philip Yes, a contract signed by both myself and the artist. so all good. Yeah I think he just considers his feedback on the production to be co-production. But as I said, this is the second time this has happened for me. It's kind of strange,

    9. Philip
      Philip

Aug '23Congrats man! Great song.Co-prod sounds a bit weird. Taking a look at the credits to the other songs it seems that the only other he has prod on is the other record with features on. Guess he sorted that out so he thinks heโ€™s entitled to prod credit. I wouldnโ€™t worry about it too much if the bizz is all good. Have you got pub splits in writing?

    Repeat client already - dang

Just figured I'd share a win here to encourage. Pretty stoked to have a client I only started with probably 2 weeks ago for three songs that is so happy she's already wanting to have a convo about signing for three more songs so when we track vocals we can also do some writing too. She wasn't super happy with her prior producer and she's already loving what I'm sending her and these songs aren't even done. I think the moral of the story is - do great work. Another $7500 deal. I'm realizing that if I... See more

Jul '23@Raoul So I'm coming at it from a bit of a different place because I have a following of almost 200k on YouTube so most of my interactions require no rapport building because they already know they want me to work with them. BUT... a lot of it is confidence and leading the conversation - I am using the framework that Dan has in this course here on the calls.Be a solution for them - beyond that I also find that positioning not as just a "service provider" but also a tastemaker is very h... Jul '23@John I didn't really have any objections to the money side.I think when you build rapport before the call even happens - you dont have as any objections. So I have a following of close to 200k on YouTube which undeniably helps. First off - I can't take everyone who comes in - I say "no" to most of the people who want me to produce them because I am just being super selective - so that alone means if I'm getting on a call then they already know that they were almost "selected by me" inst... It's really inspiring to see how you've positioned yourself and how that translates to working with premium clients. This idea is huge:"I'm getting on a call then they already know that they were almost "selected by me" instead of them choosing me which changes the entire conversation."Really appreciate the insight here man, thanks for the words of wisdom!

    Highest paying client!

A few days ago I landed my highest paying client yet! $750 for a full track! I tried out the SSF call framework with them, which I didn't do amazing on... first time! But they still wanted to work together and I think that it is a great fit! Also recently finished a rough draft for a remix that I'm doing for a band and they loved it! It isn't a paid project but they have a small record label which the remix will be released on. I think it will give me some great opportunities to secure more royalties because they are super focussed on that!

    A Couple (small) Wins

I set a timeline with my artist to finish a song I'm really excited about! It has been a long and very emotional process. I got so discouraged for a while because he was reluctant to set any goals or agree on a schedule. But I put my fears, insecurities and excuses aside, followed up again, and now things are moving in the right direction. I have been consistent with my AM/PM formulas and started working through the "Artist's Way," which has definitely pushed me out of my comfort zone and already... See more

Jul '23@Betty tbh I don't write that much! nowhere near the three pages she stipulates. I've got a big notebook and tiny writingโ€”I'd be there all morning! I just write until I feel like I've gained clarity on something or processed something. Most days half a page to a page, some days just a few lines. What do you find hard about it, just the quantity?

Finally got a win and its a Big one

OK so I'm a writer and I tend to be a bit long winded with things, but bare with me. I've been with Dark Label for a while now and I never really succeeded due to me having 101 side hustles but I always saw the potential. It was very nerve racking to decide to join this Producer Incubator but I felt in my gut that it would be the key for me. When I started I did very little outreach due to me deciding to work on my portfolio first. I didn't want wait too long, but I didn't feel my portfolio met m... See more

    First Sales Call

Landed my first sales call via IG this morning; it's scheduled for tomorrow. Ultimately, I landed the call because the artist seems to have a slow moving trajectory for their next single release. So I asked what's holding them back from moving forward with more records...which was money. That gave me something to go forward with and ask if they'd be open to hop on a call with me to talk about what they expect from a music producer. It's been a bit of a slow road for me to get on the outreach trai... See more
